There’s a buzz of excitement at Hammonds Plains Fire Hall and Community Centre as association volunteers move tables ahead of the Sunday community market on Labour Day weekend.
It’ll be the first Sunday the market has access to the newly constructed wheelchair ramp, winding up to the centre’s back door.
“We replaced the front stairs and repaired the side stairs, but we needed $10,000 for a ramp to make the building fully accessible,” says Shaun MacIntyre, the association’s treasurer.
MacIntyre says the previous board, mainly consisting of firefighters, entered into talks with HRM to buy the 75-year-old building because they wanted it returned to the community.
“So now it’s purely run by volunteers and it’s up to the community to make it work,” says MacIntyre.
The centre’s hyper-local community market, every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., consists of about 20-to-25 weekly and occasional food and craft vendors; many of them are from Hammonds Plains. “We have meat, breads, local coffee … and most vendors have debit or squares, so it’s not cash-only,” says Mandy Quinn, manager of the weekend market.
“I noticed one lady in a wheelchair and it was a joy seeing her son get her in here today … usually they struggle,” says Brian Withrow of Withrow’s Farm Markets.
