I spoke with food coach Wendy McCallum and author of Real Food for Real Families on healthy winter eating tips for beating those Jan. blues. Shannon Chappelle from Spa Chappelle talks about her holistic approach at finding inner and outer balance and staying strong through winter. Kim Slauenwhite, a local Aromatherapist, offers up some recipes and essential oils to lift the mood and brighten spirits.

Mood-boosting essential oils:
- Citrus: Lemon, lime (top note)
- Bergamot (top note)
- Frankincense (base note)
- Geranium (middle note)
- Peppermint (top note oil) “Great morning motivator to mix into shower gel,” says Slauenwhite.
Calming oils that can help ease restless sleep, anxiety and SAD
- Lavender (middle note)
- Rosewood (base note)
- Sandalwood (base note)
- Ylang Ylang
Soothing or Anti-inflammatory oils:
- Eucalyptus (top note oil): “Phenomenal for cold’s, flu’s or bronchial issues,” says Slauenwhite.
- Lemon (top note oil)
- Mandarin (top note oil)
- Tea tree (top note oil)
Aromatic winter-busting recipes from Aromatherapist, Kim Slauenwhite:
Pick Me Up: Mix 4 drops rosemary, 2 drops peppermint, 2 drops lemongrass into 10 millilitres of carrier oil (or minimize the amount and apply directly to a tissue for inhalation).
Cold/Flu: One drop each of peppermint, eucalyptus and tea tree in a warm bowl of water for inhalation.
Headaches (especially due to cold or flu): Mix 3 drops of lavender and 3 drops of eucalyptus in 2 ½ tsp of oil and massage over forehead and behind ears, back of neck and shoulders.
